Surprising, Spain legend back to national team

In a surprising move by the Spanish Footballing Authorities, former World Cup winner and Spain’s all time top goal scorer Villa has been recalled for Spain’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Liechtenstein.

The former Barcelona striker has scored 59 goals for Spain. The 2008 Euro Cup winner has not featured for Spain since they were knocked out of the group stages in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Spaniard has scored 60 goals in 87 games in his stint with MLS side New York City FC in the current season and he joins Spain currently leading Group G of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with four games to go.

The Spanish Football Federation posted their squad for the upcoming qualifiers and revealed David Villa at the very end of the squad sheet.

A notable absentee from Spain’s squad is ofcourse Diego Costa who is still sorting out his own club future. Spain’s national team manager Julen Lopetegui was very happy at Villa’s selection as he said, “We believe he can help us. He gives us mobility and is especially eager. We hope and trust he will help us.”

Another notable absentee from Spain’s squad is Chelsea’s star wing-back Marcos Alonso and Lopetegui believes Alonso will be considered for the future. He concluded, “We saw Marcos Alonso live and he was fine. We have followed him and do not rule out his presence in the future.”
