Juventus have reportedly instigated a transfer tug-of war with Inter for Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi, who is “willing” to move back to Italy.

According to ESPN, Inter had been leading the race for Mustafi but now face competition from Juve, who have yet to sign a replacement for Leonardo Bonucci.

However, it remains to seen how far the Bianconeri will go for the German, given they are in advanced talks to sign his countryman Benedikt Howedes.

The 25-year-old was dropped to the substitutes’ bench for Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday, and ESPN adds the Gunners would be happy to sell him, providing they “recoup most” of the €40m they paid Valencia to sign him last summer.

Furthermore, the player himself would be interested in returning to Serie A, where he plyed his trade for Sampdoria between 2012 and 2014.
