Liverpool are becoming increasingly interested in Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, reports The Daily Star.

There are a number of clubs watching the talented 20-year-old, including Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, but Liverpool have now entered the race for the German whose price is thought to be somewhere around €80m.

Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Wirtz, who has scored six goals and provided nine assists in 15 games in all competitions this season. The Reds manager believes he can fill the void left by Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian leaves.

While Liverpool already have plenty of depth in the attacking department, signing a player of Wirtz’s caliber would be welcome, so Klopp’s reputation and contacts in Germany ensure they could be genuine contenders for his signature.

However, the chances of him signing in January are said to be non-existent if Bayer Leverkusen are still in contention for the Bundesliga title. “Aspirinat” are at the top of the German football elite with two points more than Bayern Munich in second place.

The report adds that Man Utd were also previously tipped to sign Wirtz when Ralf Rangnick was in charge of the club, however, the Red Devils never took the opportunity to sign him.
