United have been linked with a move for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal international told Real Madrid he wanted leave

JOSE MOURINHO wants Manchester United to forget resigning Cristiano Ronaldo – and wants Barcelona star Neymar instead.

United have been linked with a move for the Real Madrid ace after he revealed he wanted to leave Spain after being accused of £13million tax fraud.

But according to Diario Gol, Mourinho would rather United splash their cash on Brazil talisman Neymar than Ronaldo.

And the report suggests it is due to their relationship breaking down after Mourinho’s time at the Bernabeu.

Neymar is still only 25 and would cost around £170m while Ronaldo could cost around £130m but is coming to the end of his career at the age of 32.

And former Santos star Neymar is reportedly open to switching the Nou Camp for Old Trafford to get out of Lionel Messi’s shadow.

Mourinho recently revealed he would have no part in transfer negotiations after becoming tired of football.

He said: “Ed Woodward has my analysis, has what I want, what I would like for more than two months.

“Now it’s for him, now for the owners and the people who work with him [to sort], so I just wait.

“But I don’t care about football for now.”

But United could face a fight to sign Neymar after the striker renewed his contract with the La Liga club.

Neymar is now contracted with Barca – where he has scored 105 goals in 186 appearances – until 2021.

He said: “I want to be here and that’s why I’ve renewed.

“I’m happy with everything I’ve done here for the club. I’m happy with my team-mates and I feel at home.”
