Spanish media outlet Don Balon say Barca have offered the midfielder to Paris St-Germain as bait for Marco Verratti.
But Messi isn’t impressed and is determined to keep the Croatian at the Nou Camp.
It’s suggested Barca chiefs have been receptive to Messi’s request and have assured him Rakitic will not be offloaded.
Rakitic has been an impressive performer since signing from Sevilla in 2014.
Messi and Rakitic have linked up well on the pitch together.
And Don Balon say the Argentine superstar doesn’t want his close pal to depart this summer.
Messi is a hugely influential figure at the Catalan heavyweights.
He was rewarded with a bumper new five-year deal earlier this month.
However, Messi’s contract aside, Barca fans haven’t had much to get excited about during this transfer window.
Gerard Deulofeu has been snapped up from Everton for around £10m.
But they haven’t managed to snare Hector Bellerin from Arsenal or Verratti from PSG.
