David de Gea focused on Manchester United despite Real Madrid interest

Ander Herrera insists David de Gea is ‘focused’ on Manchester United amid lingering interest from Real Madrid.

The Champions League winners have not ended their interest in De Gea nearly two years after his £29million deadline day move to the Bernabeu collapsed after paperwork was submitted too late.

De Gea signed a new United contract the following week and Jose Mourinho’s appointment last year convinced De Gea to remain at the club after his difficulties with Louis van Gaal.

Madrid are lurking again but, ahead of their pre-season friendly in Santa Clara on Sunday, United expect De Gea to stay. His compatriot and confidant Herrera also sounded optimistic while discussing the Spain goalkeeper’s future.

“I am repeating myself every day,” Herrera said after United beat City in Houston on Thursday. “He is a goalkeeper who can give you points. That is very important.

“I want to keep him here, to play with him, because he’s a fantastic keeper and also my friend, and I think you can see he’s very focused on Manchester United. He did a fantastic job today.

“If you lose the top three in any position, like David is, like Pogba is, like Lukaku is, like Marcus can be, we don’t want to lose them, we want to keep them, and David is in the top three.

“For me, he’s the best in the world, so I want to keep him here at United.”

Herrera’s comments tally with De Gea’s stance following Van Gaal’s sacking last year, when M.E.N. Sport revealed he was ‘focused’ on honouring his United contract ahead of Mourinho’s unveiling.

The M.E.N. reported in May United were confident De Gea would spend a seventh season at Old Trafford and that stance is not believed to have changed.

Herrera also echoed Mourinho’s comments about how well prepared United’s pre-season tour of the United States has been.

“I think it’s very good to have minutes in our legs,” Herrera added. “The result was not important, but it was better to win, obviously, even more so when you play against your city opponents. It was important for our legs.

“When you work very hard and you win, you push yourself even more. We are very happy, we are doing good things. Overall, the first game against LA Galaxy was a good game, and against Real Salt Lake was different because of the altitude and everything, but we won as well, so we are happy.

“We are working hard, we know the way our manager wants us to play, I think there’s a good understanding between us and the manager, so I am very optimistic. We have to respect every opponent.

“City, of course, are going to be fighting for every title, they are spending money for it, and it will be a very good race for the trophies next season.”
