Thomas Muller names Real Madrid ace among the best defenders in the world


Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller has named Real Madrid‘s Sergio Ramos as one of the best defenders in the world.

Muller also disclosed that he feels Bayern trio Mats Hummels, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng are amongst the top defenders.

Muller told goal: “I met Jaap Stam one time in Mark van Bommel’s testimonial. It was a friendly match and he was in my team. So I was lucky!

“Of course, Real Madrid won three Champions League titles, I think Sergio Ramos is one top level defender.

“But also with Mats Hummels, Javi Martinez, Jerome Boateng – when I play against them in the training sessions, it’s very tough.”

Ramos has enjoyed an illustrious career that has seen him win the Champions League with Real Madrid on three occasions and, although he is renowned for his lack of discipline, the Spaniard is undoubtedly an outstanding defender, as demonstrated by the fact that he was successful with 66% of the headed duels that he contested last season.


Hummels, Martinez and Boateng are also superb defenders, with Muller undoubtedly benefiting from facing players of such a high standard in training.

After returning to Bayern from Borussia Dortmund, Hummels produced some outstanding performances as he helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side to win the Bundesliga title – he averaged five defensive actions per game and was successful with 88% of the passes that he attempted.
