Thierry Henry has backed Chelsea’s decision to sign Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.

The Spain international put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with the Premier League champions after Chelsea spent £58m to sign the centre-forward from Real Madrid.

The Blues were initially linked with a move to sign former striker Romelu Lukaku but Manchester United beat the title winners to the £75m signing of the Everton striker.

Morata will be tasked with replacing Diego Costa’s goal void in the Chelsea team after Antonio Conte told the controversial Spain international that he is free to leave the club.

The 24-year-old made a conspicuous start to his Chelsea career after Morata missed his spot-kick in a penalty shootout loss to London rivals Arsenal in the Community Shield last weekend.

Former Arsenal striker Henry believes Morata will be a good addition to the Chelsea team despite his disappointing competitive debut at Wembley.

“He is the type of striker that Antonio Conte likes,” Henry told Sky Sports.

“He’s generous in the way he plays, he knows what he needs to do at all times.

“He asks for the ball in behind, he holds the ball up and he can score goals too.”

Morata scored 15 goals in 26 appearances in La Liga last season following his return to Real Madrid from Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Chelsea have also signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger and Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
