Barcelona supremo Josep Maria Bartomeu believes that the Catalan giants placed too much trust in a player like Neymar and claims that itself is the reason the Brazilian left the club for Paris Saint-Germain.
The Blaugrana faced worldwide criticism for their approach to keep Neymar at the club despite the player wanting to leave but Bartomeu is still in disbelief that the Brazlian superstar as left the club.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo as reported by Marca, Bartomeu said, “The first self-criticism we have is that we relied too much on Neymar. He did not act with the right decorum. I do not know [why he left]. You should ask him. He did not tell us.”
Bartomeu sounded angry as he continued, “For money? To lead a sporting project? Here, he was at the best club in the world surrounded by many of the best players in the world and without a doubt, that is Messi. But I do not know why he did not explain it to us. He paid the clause and left.”
The club president believes Neymar’s departure did lead to a sense of negativity around Barcelona football club and claimed, “There is a disenchantment among the fans but this pessimism must be stopped. We have a better team than last year. Neymar’s exit is an opportunity to return to the collective approach to football, to invest in the academy.”
Speaking about Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta’s futures, Bartomeu claimed that both players have new contracts that they are satisfied with. He concluded by stating, “The Catalans should not worry about Messi, his father signed the renewal. With Iniesta, there is an agreement in principle to continue at the club.”
