Tottenham Hotspur are set to move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes in January after missing out on signing him on deadline day, claims a report.

The north London side wanted to sign the Portugal international on a season long loan and were close to completing the deal on deadline day only for Barcelona to pull the plug due to their inability to get in a replacement.

According to the Daily Star, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will look to sign Gomes once the transfer window reopens in January, though they could face competitions from rivals West Ham United who are also interested in the player.

Spurs bought in the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Fernando Llorente, Paulo Gazzanigga, Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth this summer but Pochettino also wanted to bring in Gomes whose time at Barcelona has not been a success.

The former Valencia midfielder joined Barcelona last summer for around €50 million but was unable to impress during his debut season at the Nou Camp and often provoked the ire of the fans with his displays.

Gomes is now expected to be a bit part player following the arrival of Paulinho and is likely to leave the club soon as he wishes for more playing time. Despite interest from West Ham, the 24- year-old is likely to prefer a move to Spurs as he wants to work with Pochettino and he will most likely get his wish when the transfer window reopens.

Gomes made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan side last season and helped them win the Copa del Rey, though they suffered disappointments in La Liga and the Champions League.
