Real Madrid President Florentino Pere has claimed that had Lionel Messi been in his current level in the early 2000’s, he would have tried to sign him for Real Madrid. Messi joined Barcelona as a youngster and has established himself as one of the greatest players in football history and has often been a thorn in Real Madrid’s side.
Perez, who is know for his extravagant spending, has now claimed that he would have tried to sign the Argentine in the past, though he admits that any such deal would be impossible now.
Speaking to Cadena SER, as reported by FourFourTwo, Perez said, “If there had been a Messi in my first stage [as president], I would have gone after him. He is a type of player like Zidane.”
“In my first stage, possibly,” Perez said. “He is now a Barca player. He has been there since he was a kid. It would be very difficult.”
Messi made his debut for Barcelona as a 17-year-old and has since made 587 appearances for the Catalan side, scoring a mammoth 510 goals in all competitions.
Even though his future is currently up in the air, with his contract expiring next summer, the chances of Messi joining Real Madrid are virtually nil as the Argentine is too close to Barcelona to betray them.
