Real Madrid hope Pique precedent will quell Carvajal suspension fears

UEFA are to look into the yellow card handed to Dani Carvajal against APOEL Nicosia on Tuesday night although Real Madrid are confident that they’ll escape further punishment.

With the right-back one booking away from a ban, he wasted time over a throw-in which he ensured he will serve the suspension in the dead rubber versus Borussia Dortmund, rather than in the knockout rounds.

While the referee’s report has not given any further evidence regarding the incident, UEFA are to investigate through their disciplinary committee with a possible one-game ban coming Carvajal’s way.

That said, Real are confident that no such action will be taken given Gerard Pique’s similar act in the 2015/16 competition where he took a sacrificial yellow card against Arsenal and wasn’t reprimanded.

One occasion that UEFA did take matters further was when Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos both took bookings in a win at Ajax, with television footage showing instructions from the bench being relayed to the duo via Jerzy Dudek.

Yet the governing body has confirmed to MARCA that no comparison is seen between that and Carvajal’s actions with a decision to be made by December 7.
