Court to decide fate of Spanish national anthem disrupter

On December 12, the president of Catalunya Accio, Santiago Espot, will be judged by the National Court for organising the disruption of the Spanish national anthem played at the start of the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Athletic Club in 2015.

Espot is accused of insults to the Crown and outrage to the symbols of the State, crimes for which he will be punished by the Central Criminal Court and for which the Prosecutor’s Office asks for a fine of 14,400 euros to be imposed.

The prosecutor holds him responsible for acting “in execution of a plan preconceived and planned by himself with the deliberate and firm purpose of offending and belittling the Head of the Spanish State and the national anthem, for which both represent as symbols for the collective feelings identified with the Spanish nation.”

Catalunya Accio was one of the independent organisations that distributed 10,000 whistles among those attending the final to encourage participation in the event.
