This is Messi’s LaLiga

The day that LaLiga was decided, it was Lionel Messi who decided it. Time and time again, Barcelona have had the Argentine superstar to thank with Sunday’s win over Atletico Madrid keeping them on the road to title glory.

The task was simple when welcoming Diego Simeone’s raucous bunch to the Camp Nou: produce the final blow to end the pursuit of their main title rivals.

Now possessing an eight-point gap back to Atleti, the Blaugrana can focus on the Champions League and take stock of their achievements under Ernesto Valverde.

It is fair to say that LaLiga is all but won in March, an incredible feat with the best player in the world the first man to thank.

Ten times has Messi opened the scoring in Barcelona’s 27 league games this season, helping himself to 23 goals overall having played in every single fixture – only one of which came from the bench.

Included in that tally are four braces, a hat-trick and a four-goal haul versus Eibar.

The simple fact is that no one can get near Messi for these statistics and his ability to amaze and delight his fans, and anger and intimate his rivals, remains as strong as ever.
