Rafael da Silva reveals Cristiano Ronaldo called him and his brother Fabio to convince them to sign for Manchester United over Arsenal

A phone call from Cristiano Ronaldo was the final factor which persuaded Rafael da Silva to join Manchester United, says the Brazil full back.
Rafael and his twin brother Fabio joined Old Trafford in 2007, after a tug-of-war between United and Arsenal.
Rafael, now of Lyon, said he and his sibling were leaning towards United anyway, but a chat with Ronaldo sealed the deal.

The Brazil full back says Ronaldo gave him and his brother a call before their 2007 transfer

He told ESPN: ‘[Cristiano] Ronaldo called us and asked us to join United. He knew that Arsenal wanted us too, but we had given our word to United, and my parents said that was important.
‘Nani was also there and the Brazilian, Anderson, of course. Those three helped me and my brother a lot because we couldn’t speak any English.’
While he was welcomed on his entrance to Old Trafford, Rafael revealed his exit – under Louis van Gaal – carried a lot less ceremony.

Rafael eventually left for Lyon after a one-minute talk with United manager Louis van Gaal
He said: ‘In his first season, Van Gaal called me into his office and said: “You can leave.” The meeting lasted one minute. That was it: “You can leave”.
‘Then he texted me to say “You know how football is.” I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t speak to me and then texted me to wish me well. I said: “Thank you.” I was being polite, but I was angry.’
Rafael spent seven seasons at United before moving to France, while his brother Fabio is now with Middlesbrough.
