Marcelo admits : It was a penalty!

Real Madrid defender Marcelo admitted he had committed a handball during his side’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich, an incident which led to Zinedine Zidane’s side scraping through to the final 4-3 on aggregate.

Marcelo blocked a shot from Joshua Kimmmich with his arm just before half-time at the Santiago Bernabeu, when the game was poised at 1-1.

Bayern could have gone into the dressing room 2-1 had the penalty been given but instead they fell behind at the start of the second half when Karim Benzema scored a tap in after Sven Ulreich’s dissastrous slip.

“It’s a handball, it hit me on the hand and I think it’s a penalty,” Marcelo said.

“If I say it didn’t hit me I’d be lying, but football is like that.

I don’t talk about referees, but it’s clear that sometimes they make decisions in your favour and other times against you, but whatever happens you have to play football.”

Marcelo also praised Benzema for scoring the two crucial goals after being criticised for going so long wthout a goal.

“It’s clear that it had to come, Karim is a great player and he doesn’t have to score goals every day to show what he’s worth,” added the Brazilian.

“I don’t think that Karim thinks he lifted a weight off his shoulders. He works very hard for the team. Everyone has bad days once in a while, but he deserved to have a match like tonight.”
