Manchester Utd and Tottenham will swap star players?

• Spurs are looking for players of Martial’s profile

• The Frenchman needs game time with France omission

• United are interested in Spurs player Toby Alderweireld

According to Evening Standard, Tottenham are ‘reluctant’ to recruit another pure striker to compete with their prized asset Harry Kane as their latest attempts fell through. Both Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have cost the club more than £10m per goal as their goal scoring record has been far from impressive even in Kane’s absence.

Thus, Mauricio Pochettino would look to improve his squad with players to complement Kane rather than replace him and Martial is regarded by the Spurs boss as one of the ideal candidates. The 22-year-old needs game time badly as lack of it has cost him a place in France squad for the World Cup with his teammate Paul Pogba making the list.

Pochettino would hope a player of Martial’s calibre would be willing to join his club. Last summer, Spurs were hunting for Alvaro Morata, but found it difficult to convince then Real Madrid striker to join as he opted for a more ‘glamorous’ option in Chelsea.

What perhaps could help is Man United’s interest in Spurs’ defender Toby Alderweireld as, according to the emerging whispers, Jose Mourinho is very keen on the 29-year-old Belgian. For Tottenham, it would mean paying much less for the player, whose contract at Man United expires in summer 2019.

The Frenchman is facing a long summer as he may have already played his final game for Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. On paper, Martial has played 45 games this term across all competitions, but most of the time he was reduced to last minute cameos as on average, he’s played 52 minutes per game. Of all the 11 goals scored and 9 assists made, the bulk of them had happened before Alexis Sanchez moved in January which saw Martial’s game time reduced.
