Milan midfielder Lucas Biglia has announced his international retirement after Argentina crashed out of the 2018 World Cup.

La Seleccion lost 4-3 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash with France this afternoon.

“We had our best performance up until going 2-1 up,” Biglia told Fox Sports, though he was on the bench throughout.

“This is football. We leave with great sadness, because it is the end of the road for some of us. I hope that those who follow can work with less pressure and take Argentina to where it deserves to be.

“It’s time for me to step aside, to be honest with myself, to say there is a new generation rich with talent and it’s time for them to take over.”

Biglia had managed a remarkable race against time to be fit for the tournament after cracking bones in his back while playing for Milan in late April.

The 32-year-old ends his Argentina career with 57 caps and one goal.

Javier Mascherano also announced his international retirement this evening.
