UEFA will review the rule for the away goal in European competitions, many coaches have complained about this rule, saying it is time to change. Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and Rafael Benitez were part of the panel of coaches who demanded this change from UEFA.
The rule for the away goal means that the goal scored by a club as a guest is more valuable than the one scored at home. Last season, Barcelona won the quarterfinals home match against Rome with a 4-1 result, while Roma won 3-0 . Although the overall result was equal, 4-4, Roma qualified in the semifinals because of the away goal.
UEFA General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti has confirmed that they will open a debate about the future of this rule, which is criticized by the coaches and managers of many European clubs.
“Managers think that scoring goals as a guest is not as difficult as it has been in the past. They think that this rule should be reviewed and for that reason, we will do it, “Marchetti said.
“They estimate that the situation in football has changed, and the away goal is no longer the same as the first few years, when this rule was originally used.”
The rule was first used in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965.
