“De Gea is world number one”

Spain boss Luis Enrique believes David de Gea is the world’s best goalkeeper on current form after Saturday’s 2-1 win against England.

“I never make changes to secure a result,” said the former Barcelona Coach after La Roja’s Nations League opener.

“The changes were for Marco to give us more pace and take advantage of the space and Sergi Roberto because we needed a player like him, with a lot of technique.

“Inigo [Rodriguez] hadn’t played for a long time but did well for the last few minutes. If you make changes to hold on to a result, you end up drawing.

“Saul’s a player I like very much. He has quality, an extraordinary physique and brutal mentality. He’s also good tactically and he has goals in him… I love him.

‘I’ve never had any doubts over De Gea. He may make mistakes, but so does every goalkeeper and in him we have one of the best in the world.

“I’m very calm with David, he’s a top player. His game and all the seasons he’s played in England make him our No 1. For his numbers and performance, he’s the world No 1.

“I make decisions based on what I see, and I saw Aspas specially prepared this week. I think he had a good game.

“Starting like this is the best way to do so, but in football only the present is valid. Pressing is what I want. Limiting space against a team with three centre-backs is very complicated.”
