With his sights firmly set on Wednesday’s Champions League opener, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema has given his first interview of the season and discussed his hopes for the match against Roma and indeed the campaign.

Los Blancos have started the season well and Benzema already has four goals to his name and he is looking forward to getting their Champions League defence underway at home.

“We have started well in LaLiga Santander,” he said.

“We play with a high pace, a lot of possession and quality and the victories have been good for us.

“To have the first game at home is important and we need to keep possession and get into our rhythm more than the opposition.”

At Real Madrid, nothing less than success is acceptable and Benzema says that drives the team on to win.

“In this club the aim is always to win,” he said.

“We have to win everything and play well and have to sacrifice to win.

“Every time I play I want to score, assist and help the team to win. Each year I have more responsibility and this year I am the third captain so I have to show a lot.”

The French forward has always worked hard and put the team first, which he says is more important than anything.

“Talent is important but you need more work.

“You can do a lot with talent but if you want to reach the highest level then you have to work hard.

“Work hard, always have your dreams in mind and never lower them. Always think you will fulfil your dream.”
