Uncertainty at Real Madrid over the right-back position

It seemed that the summer arrival of Alvaro Odriozola would put to bed the discussions over who should replace Dani Carvajal at right-back when the Spaniard is absent. However, there are three options to replace the injured defender for this Sunday’s Clasico.

Odriozola is one of them, but he hasn’t been playing as regularly as he might have liked since arriving from Real Sociedad.

While he has been the primary option to fill in for Carvajal, centre-back Nacho was preferred for the away match at Sevilla (a 3-0 loss) and right winger Lucas Vazquez was the one used on the right of defence for the 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday.

This is similar to the situation last season, when Nacho, Lucas and Achraf Hakimi were the options to replace Carvajal when needed.

Odriozola seems to be trusted by Julen Lopetegui more than Achraf was by Zinedine Zidane and he may simply have been left out against Viktoria Plzen to avoid risking an injury, but it is true that there is uncertainty as to who’ll play at that position in Sunday’s match.
