Mourinho on the way!?

JOSE MOURINHO is the ‘great dream’ of Real Madrid as they look for a permanent successor for Julen Lopetegui.

The Los Blancos manager was sacked yesterday after a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday in El Clasico.

And Manchester United boss Mourinho is the man wanted to take charge at the Bernabeu, according to reports.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim the Special One is the ultimate target for Los Blancos.

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was the favourite to replace Lopetegui but talks have ended unsuccessfully.

And Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is said to be the other name in the frame for the job.

Real have placed B team coach Santiago Solari in temporary charge of the club after sacking Lopetegui.

But they have not indicated how long he will be in control.

Hiring Mourinho would be unlikely to happen until the end of the season unless Manchester United sacked the Portuguese.

The Special One has been under pressure at Old Trafford after a series of poor results.

Mourinho has also had a public bust-up with World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

But a win against Everton on Sunday relieved some of the pressure on the Special One following the Champions League loss to Juventus at Old Trafford.

Lopetegui lasted just 10 La Liga matches in charge of Real Madrid.

And it ends a miserable few months as the 52-year-old was axed by Spain just days before the World Cup after Los Blancos announced he would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid return to action tomorrow night against Melilla in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey.

After that Solari welcomes Valladolid to the Bernabeu in La Liga on Saturday (3.15pm).

Real currently sit ninth, seven points behind leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona.
