Bayern have eyes on Man City midfielder

According to a recent report, Bayern Munich are considering a move for Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Bayern Munich have already signed a few players as part of their plans to rejuvenate their squad for the future. They recently announced that Lucas Hernandez will join from Atletico Madrid in the summer for €80 million, after they had already confirmed that Benjamin Pavard will join from VfB Stuttgart.

Their defense now taken care of, the Bavarians will focus on reinforcing their attack. CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently confirmed his club will be in for at least one winger in the summer market, while they could also add some depth at striker.

Midfield is by far the club’s strongest department. However, there have been many reports recently claiming Bayern could also be interested in signing a midfielder or two in the summer.

According to a report from the Mirror (via Sky Germany), Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has emerged as a potential candidate for the Bavarians. The 28-year-old’s contract expires next summer, and he has thus far refused to sign an extension. Man City could be resigned to sell him for a cut-price in the summer, and Die Roten are among the top candidates to swoop him up.

Gundogan has made himself the commanding figure in Manchester that he would have liked after leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016. However, he has finally played a key role for the Citizens this season.

Though he’s undoubtedly a talented a player, it’s hard to see how Gundogan would fit in at Bayern. If anything, he’d serve as a backup to Thiago Alcantara. Given the source, it’s unlikely there is any real interest from the club anyway.

If Die Roten do have their eyes on Manchester City, they’d be much better off considering Gundogan’s fellow German teammate, Leroy Sane. Price tag aside, Sane would be a much better fit for the club, who could use a young, fast, left-footed winger.

And if Bayern Munich are in the market for a midfielder, they’d be better off looking for a more defensive-minded player than Gundogan. Javi Martinez is now on the wrong side of 30, and a player who can take over his mantle as the club’s best pure defensive midfielder — such as Atletico Madrid’s Rodri — would be a much better purchase than Gundogan.
