“That’s the price you pay for being the world’s best”

Lionel Messi was made to look a mere mortal by Colombia as his Argentina team were bullied and outplayed in Saturday’s Copa America curtain-raiser in Brazil, falling to a 2-0 reverse that lays bare the myriad problems afflicting the supposed international giants. And lots of criticism has been thrown towards the Argentina captain.

Falcao, more than once, was sympathetic with the pressures on Argentine No. 10, both in Barcelona and in the Copa America.

“If Messi scores, they’ll say why didn’t he score two goals. If he gives an assist, they’ll say why didn’t he assist more. If he plays well they’ll say the defenders are weak. If he scores a free-kick they’ll say the wall was not aligned correctly.”

“If Argentina loses, it’s Messi’s fault. That’s the price you pay for being the best in the world.”
