Valverde: Barcelona have a lot of players in midfield, we’ll see what happens

Ernesto Valverde has hinted that there may still be some exits at Barcelona this summer, particularly in midfield.

The club brought in Frenkie de Jong, who is likely to be a key player in 2019/20, while Riqui Puig may also be ready to take more of a prominent role.

“There are quite a few players in midfield,” Valverde said after the win against Arsenal in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

“We’ll see if something happens. I don’t know if any sales or signings will be completed.”

Arturo Vidal’s name was one mentioned, with the Chilean having been important in 2018/19.

“This year there’s more competition,” the coach rather bluntly replied.

Lionel Messi spoke ahead of the game and declared that the Catalans would be looking to win everything again this season.

“That’s the pressure of fighting for trophies,” he added.

“We have to fight to win every game and he’s said it, as we all have.

“I’d love to celebrate LaLiga [Santander] in April again, as we have in previous years.”

De Jong was named man of the match, and the Dutchman has been impressing all of those who seen him this summer.

“He’s curious and thoughtful and always wants to improve,” Valverde said of the youngster.

“He’s always demanding and always wants the ball. He doesn’t overplay in tough situations.

“He can work harder and give us more speed. He’s a good signing.”
