Manchester United are yet to make a signing so far this summer with Erik ten Hag cautious in his approach but Frenkie de Jong has been lined up as one of their priority targets
Frenkie de Jong has liked one of Manchester United ‘s most recent Instagram posts as speculation continues to rise over where he will be playing his football next season.
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer as Erik ten Hag tries to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season. De Jong is seen as a ‘priority’ transfer target by those at the top of the United hierarchy and the Red Devils are hoping to get the deal over the line as soon as possible.
There was some optimism that the transfer could be completed before June 30 but the two parties have not been able to agree a fee, although Barcelona need funds in order to buy. They see De Jong as the perfect player to offload to raise cash for signing targets such as Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
Amid the uncertainty surrounding De Jong’s future, he did like United’s social media post on Friday afternoon, which was captioned “Top tier for club and country” with the hasht ags #MUFC, #NothingLikeOranje and #VanNistelrooy. Supporters spotted the hint and many are now excited that the proposed deal could be edging closer.
However, Barca have been handed with a boost in regards to their financial status after securing a huge windfall having agreed to sell a significant chunk of their television rights. The Catalan giants recently confirmed their decision to generate income by selling their broadcasting rights – the club’s members voting through the sale.
Where will Manchester United finish next season? Let us know in the comments below!
It has not taken long for an agreement to be reached with the Spanish giants announcing that 10% of their LaLiga TV rights have been sold to global investment firm Sixth Street. They are set to invest €207.5m (£178.1m) over the 2022/23 season, with Barcelona receiving a ‘total capital gain’ of €267m (£229m). It is not yet clear what the immediate impact will be on their transfer business but it certainly complicates matters as they negotiate a host of deals including the arrival of Raphinha and sale of De Jong.
United are also looking at other midfield targets in case they are unable to sign De Jong with Youri Tielemans, Ruben Neves and Christian Eriksen all linked with moves to Old Trafford. It seems as though those three deals could be hard to strike, although Eriksen is still considering his future after leaving Brentford last month.
Antony has also been tipped to follow Ten Hag to Manchester but the Red Devils are supposedly put off by his £70million valuation. Tyrell Malacia is close to joining United, however, with a £15m deal in place to sign the left-back from Feyenoord.
