Chelsea somehow let £45m midfielder slip through their net

Manchester City have completed the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds for £45m.

The 26 year old has signed a 6 year deal with the champions to strengthen an already ridiculous squad with a top player at a bargain price. Chelsea meanwhile, are left short in that position.

He’s an England international who has shown himself to be more than good enough to play at the very top of the Premier League. So why weren’t Chelsea in for him? They seemed so obsessed with signing Declan Rice – which has always looked incredibly difficult since he signed his latest contract – that they couldn’t see the obvious move for Phillips right in front of them.

There was barely a whisper of any serious chance of a move until City swooped in last month to wrap it up.

He might well have chosen City in the end, but we could at least have driven the price up.
