Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino admits he sees defender Reece James as a potential club captain.

The 23-year-old defender has overcome injury and joined the squad in the USA for pre-season training and could see himself in action against Newcastle.

Pochettino needs to appoint a new captain following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta for Atletico Madrid and James is seen as an ideal option.

“James is one of the possibilities. We have been talking since day one about his goals and how he was in the last few years at the club,” Pochettino said initially.

“He feels Chelsea, as he came from the academy. He is one of the profiles, one of the players who can be the current and future captain of the club.”

“He is a very important player for us and it is good to have a player like him. We hope that tomorrow he can play”, concluded the coach of the Blues.
