Getafe sporting director Ruben Reyes has broken his silence on the Spanish club’s signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Greenwood secured a move away from United on the final day of the summer transfer window after signing for Getafe on a season-long loan.

Several teams across Europe rejected the chance to sign the player, with Brentford, AC Milan and Roma rejecting the chance to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Brest boss Gregory Lorenzi has since come out and revealed that the French team were offered the 21-year-old, but rejected the offer due to ‘controversy’.

Getafe eventually claimed the Englishman, securing his services for the 2023/24 season. And the club’s sporting director has defended Greenwood’s signing, claiming the transfer ‘is the same’ as any other.

“We did what we do – we sign players who are available to sign. There’s no need for us to deal with anything (off the field),” Reyes initially said.

“We have signed a footballer who is the same as Diego Rico and Oscar Rodriguez, and that’s it. We have to do our job, and that’s what we focus on.”

“It is a loan for one year. It is very difficult to find an option to buy a player like him. He will be here throughout the season.”

“There are internal discussions, but these are small details that we try not to share. They appreciated the effort, how convinced we were.”

“We are very excited about it. He was a player we knew was there. We worked on it, gathered information and little by little saw that there might be an opportunity. We talked with his family, with his father for a long time.”

“We were able to convince him to come here, to have faith in us. We are happy. He plays very freely, as if he were in a school playground. He has a very high level. We dreamed that we could bring him here and sometimes it comes true,” concluded Getafe’s sporting director.

Greenwood has been training with his new Getafe team-mates ahead of potentially making his debut for the La Liga side after the international break.
