Carlo Ancelotti has given his opinion about the news linking Xabi Alonso as the Italian’s successor as the next coach of Real Madrid.
Alonso, who is currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, is being considered as the ideal replacement for Ancelotti on the Madrid bench.
Ancelotti, who coached Alonso at Real Madrid during his first spell with the club in 2013 and 2015, praised the former Real player and hoped he would return to the club in a coaching capacity in the future.
In the press conference before the game with Las Palmas, Ancelotti said: “I had him (Alonso) in management as a player. He had a high level of understanding of football, he is doing very well with Bayer Leverkusen. I hope he comes here one day, just like Raul or Arbeloa. They are people I know and love very much. I hope that one day they can become coaches of Real Madrid”.
The Italian technician reiterated that he is happy to be the coach of Real Madrid.
“Everyone knows that I’m very happy here, I feel good here, but it’s not the most important topic to talk about (contract renewal). There are many matches. Criticism doesn’t bother me at all. Everyone can say what they want, but I have to focus on my job,” Ancelotti said.
The 64-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and he has been heavily linked with a move to Brazil as national team coach. Alonso, on the other hand, joined Leverkusen in October last year and has managed to win 52 percent of the games he has been in charge of the club.
This season, his club is at the top of the table level on points with Bayern Munich (13) after the first five games.
After losing 3-1 in the city derby against Atletico Madrid, Los Blancos will aim to return to positive results in Wednesday’s challenge against Las Palmas.
