Liverpool set to break club record to sign former Man City star as Salah’s replacement

Liverpool are reportedly targeting a big move in the January transfer window for Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane, according to a new report.

According to the Daily Mirror, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has identified the 27-year-old as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah should he leave for the Saudi Arabian Super League.

The Reds would be willing to break their club record fee to bring the Germany international to Anfield.

Liverpool rejected a bid said to be in the region of €200m in the summer for Salah, with the 31-year-old adamant he will stay.

Al Ittihad felt it was too late in the transfer window to test Liverpool’s resolve with an even bigger bid, but could return for the Egyptian in January.

Salah still has 18 months left on his current contract at Anfield.

Saudi Super League director of football Michael Emenalo is still convinced Salah will join the growing pool of European talent to make a move to the Middle East.

On the other hand, Sane is much younger than Salah and has already achieved the same level of success at club level with Bayern Munich.

The former City star moved from the Premier League to Germany three years ago for a fee of around €55m and has continued to impress alongside summer signing Harry Kane.

He has seven goals in 11 games this season for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including the opener in Bayern’s 4-3 win over Manchester United last month.

Liverpool’s current record transfer fee is €85 million, after they brought in Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton. But this offer could also be broken by forward Darwin Nunez, who arrived from Benfica in the summer of 2022.
