Rodrygo: I don’t like to play as ‘9’, but at Real Madrid I have to

Rodrygo Goes has occupied every possible position and role with Carlo Ancelotti in charge of Real Madrid, but that of a centre-forward is not among his preferences.

The Brazilian started as the catalyst for the European nights, moving to the starting right-back in the 4-3-3 formation last season, before finishing as a ‘9’ in the Italian coach’s new 4-4-2 diamond.

His understanding of the game, ease of association and his relationship with the goal invited him to be deployed in any position in the forward line. This season, feelings have changed.

Rodrygo is not comfortable starting as the reference of the team along with Vinicius Jr.

The 7th didn’t seem to be either, but it ended up turning left, so someone has to occupy the center zone. Number 11 has spoken about this issue.

“I’ve always made it clear that I have the ability to play on the wings, I just don’t like playing as a number 9, even though at my club I have to. In Brazil I have more freedom to move”, said Rodrygo first.

The departure of Benzema and his 30 goals for the season has also meant more pressure on the two young Brazilians. The former Santos player knows that at the club and national team he plays for and avoids it.

“It’s a positive pressure to know that people believe in you. I see myself as such in this new cycle and I think I can meet the expectations that have been placed on me”, concluded the Brazilian.
