Valencia criticizes Ballon d’Or ceremony, demands respect for their club and fans

Valencia have publicly criticized the use of images of Vinicius Junior calling for racial abuse at the Mestalla in May during the Ballon d’Or gala.

The Brazilian was receiving the Socrates award at the evening’s gala for his humanitarian contributions to leading the fight against racism in Spanish football, as well as his contribution to the education of children in his native Brazil.

As he received the award, Vinicius appeared in a montage showing him facing the crowd of fans to warn the authorities about those who were racially abusing him.

However, Los Che did not take kindly to this, releasing a public statement and demanding respect.

“Valencia regrets the use of our image at the Ballon d’Or gala and its association with isolated behavior that the club followed up urgently and decisively, applying the most severe punishment to those involved.”

“We reiterate our most absolute condemnation of racism, but we also ask for the utmost respect for our fans and our club,” the statement said.
