Inter have been fined €5,000 by the sports referee in Italy after insulting calls directed at their former player, current Roma striker Romelu Lukaku, during the two teams’ meeting on Sunday night.

There had been documented plans to make Lukaku’s return to the San Siro an uncomfortable affair, with news of whistles being distributed to supporters outside the stadium making headlines at the weekend.

Despite being advised against him, the ‘whistles’ were still distributed among the supporters, however, the fine by the authorities is specifically related to the cheering for Lukaku as he touched the ball rather than the ‘whistles’ stunt.

Inter won 1-0 against Roma on the evening thanks to an 81st-minute goal from summer signing Marcus Thuram, who came on as Lukaku’s replacement.

Unsurprisingly, Roma have also received a fine from the sports referee, totaling €3,000 for their role in delaying the restart of the second half by approximately three minutes.
