Cristiano Ronaldo is Ballon d’Or favourite says Barcelona player

Gerard Pique believes Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to win the 2017 Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have held a duopoly over the prestigious award for the nine years, with the Barcelona attacker winning five.

Indeed, Messi has been crowned the world’s best player more times than anybody else. That position could be shared with the Portuguese by January, though, according to Pique.

The centre-back told Qatari TV channel One (via Marca): “Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Champions League and La Liga, so he is favourite.

“Messi is considered the best player in history and then there are other options.”

Last season, Messi edged out his rival in the scoring stakes, with 54 goals across all competitions to Ronaldo’s 42.

However, the Argentinian didn’t enjoy the same success on a team level, only lifting the Copa del Rey during Luis Enrique’s final campaign at the Camp Nou.

Ronaldo, though, inspired Real Madrid to their 12th European crown. He scored 12 goals in the Champions League, including incredible back-to-back hat-tricks against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
