Bad news for Chelsea: Man United ‘agree’ defender deal

Chelsea, Man United & PSG

Huge news!

According to the Sun on Thursday, Man United are about to sign their fourth major player this summer.

Victor Lindelof has joined from Benfica, Romelu Lukaku has moved from Everton, while Nemanja Matic has signed from Chelsea.

But according to the Sun (who have received their information via, Man United have beaten Chelsea to land PSG full-back Serge Aurier.

What’s the story?

The tabloid have told their readers the following:

Serge Aurier has reportedly agreed a five-year deal with Manchester United.

Old Trafford chiefs are yet to agree a fee with Paris Saint-Germain for the right-back, who is also wanted by Chelsea.
Bad news for Chelsea

It seems abundantly clear that one of Antonio Conte’s main missions this summer at Chelsea was to provide back up, or replacements, for both Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso.

The Blues have been heavily linked with Juventus left back Alex Sandro. Whilst bids for the likes of Kyle Walker and Danilo were confirmed.

On Wednesday, in the Spanish press Chelsea were linked with Valencia’s Joao Cancelo.

The Valencia right back has impressed for Portugal Under-21s and looks like a player that could succeed in the Premier League thanks to his pace.

Meanwhile, Sky Sport Italia transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio has given an update on Aurier.

Asked whether Inter Milan have a chance of signing Aurier, Di Marzio replied: “A real chance, but face competition from Chelsea.”

Now, however, it feels like Conte has again lost out in the transfer market.
Can Serge Aurier enter the UK?

Holding up any move for Aurier is the PSG defender’s appeal against a conviction for assaulting a police officer.

Aurier cannot legally enter the UK right now so any transfer cannot be completed.

The Ivorian right back missed PSG’s match at Arsenal in October for this very reason.
So will he sign for United?

There are a number of factors that make Aurier’s move to Manchester United a surprise.

First off, Aurier is unlikely to be first choice at Old Trafford with Antonio Valencia playing in the same position.

In addition, Aurier infamously trolled Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a Periscope video during their time together at PSG.

Aurier is not known as the most stable character on or off the pitch and it seems surprising that both Chelsea and Manchester United are so keen on a back-up right wing back/full back.

It’s worth remembering, however, that Aurier’s agent is Jorge Mendes, while PSG are keen to sell off their surplus players after Neymar’s arrival from Barcelona.
