Ex-Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has suggested the officials favoured Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first-leg at the weekend.
In the first El Clasico of the new season at the Camp Nou, there was a fair share of controversial incidents – all of which seemed to favour the home side in the Spaniard’s opinion.
Keylor Navas was adjudged to have brought down Luis Suarez in the area in the build up to Lionel Messi’s penalty, while Cristiano Ronaldo was giving his marching orders for an alleged dive in the box following a coming together with Samuel Umtiti.
Despite this, Los Blancos still emerged victorious and Arbeloa has joked that the Catalan giants couldn’t win even with referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea on their side.
“Not even with 12 [can Barcelona win],” he tweeted.
“One day yes and another as well against Barcelona. They are laughing in our face, it’s appalling.
“Having seen this, we could make the most of it and play for the Bernabeu Trophy on Wednesday, no?”
Arbeloa hasn’t been afraid to demonstrate his ill-feeling towards Barca in the past. In December 2015 he claimed Gerard Pique was “obsessed” with Real Madrid and then poked fun at his compatriot after their Champions League win a few months later.
Thanks to an own goal from Pique plus further efforts from Ronaldo and wonderkid Marco Asensio, Madrid take a 3-1 lead into tomorrow’s second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu as they look to secure their second trophy of the season.
