Former Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado is confident Cristiano Ronaldo will win the next Ballon d’Or and equal Lionel Messi in the race for the best footballer on the planet.
Ronaldo has won world football’s highest individual prize four times out of which three of these accolades have come in the last four years, the last of which came in the year 2016. The Portuguese great is considered favourite to defend his stature as the world’s best player after leading Real Madrid to the La Liga and Champions League trophies last season.
Salgado believes equaling Messi’s record will be a turning point in Ronaldo’s career as he looks to get better with each passing year.
Speaking to AS, Salgado said, “I love them both. The fact that we have two players of this level playing together in the same era is something that should be enjoyed.”
He continued by stating, “What matters is what Ronaldo has done. To draw level on five Ballons d’Or with Messi, because he’s going to win the next one, is incredible because the other guy has technical qualities from another world, it’s as if God gave them to him with a magic wand.”
With the level of fitness displayed by Ronaldo in his performances for Real Madrid and Portugal, there is a huge possibility that the longevity of his career will play a huge role in his quest to be the greatest footballer of this generation.
