Real Madrid allowed Mariano to leave the Bernabeu this summer, despite the forward being one of their most promising academy products.
And the 24-year-old has enjoyed a stunning start to life at Lyon, scoring four goals from his first five games.
Real Madrid are struggling for a centre-forward at present, having allowed Alvaro Morata to join Chelsea over the summer.
But Spanish outlet Don Balon claims that, though Florentino Perez wants Mariano back at the Bernabeu, Zidane is not as eager.
It is said the Frenchman is aware of Perez’s plans to re-sign Mariano.
And the Lyon striker is supposedly willing to sacrifice crucial game time to play second fiddle to Karim Benzema.
But Don Balon say Zidane has acted quickly to put his foot down.
He believes the striker could one day return but for now must focus on taking Ligue 1 by storm with Lyon.
And Zidane is also content with having Borja Mayoral at his disposal.
But, should Benzema’s form wane, then the Real manager would rather sign a proven forward.
In recent days, both Edinson Cavani and Alexis Sanchez have been tipped to move to La Liga.
Sanchez’s contract at Arsenal expires next year, while Cavani could quit PSG after falling out with main man Neymar.
