Karim Benzema talks playing with ‘selfish’ Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid

Real Madrid might be a few years removed from the ‘Galacticos’ era, but there’s no denying they still have some superstars in their ranks.

None more so than goal machine, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Karim Benzema is, arguably, a world-class striker in his own right. But at Los Blancos, he serves as a supporting act to Ronaldo and has done since he arrived at the Bernabeu in 2009, the same summer as Ronaldo.

The Frenchman has scored a very respectable 182 goals in 377 Real Madrid games, but that’s almost nothing compared to Ronaldo’s haul of 414 goals in 407 appearances.

Could Benzema have scored more, or, perhaps, been a bigger star is he had been the focal point elsewhere?

When asked about playing alongside Ronaldo at Real, Benzema conceded that the 32-year-old is a selfish player, but his selfish nature has worked out well for his career, too.

“[Ronaldo] is more selfish than me, but that’s normal,” Benzema explained in an interview with Canal+, via Marca.

“We get along well, I like to play with him. In the end, his selfishness doesn’t bother me, it is good for the team.”

Benzema has enjoyed a glroious career alongside Ronaldo with both men winning two La Liga titles in addition to three of the last four Champions League titles.

One would think that Benzema could surely aid France in their bid to win the World Cup in Russia next year, too.

Boss Didier Deschamps has exiled the striker from his ultra-talented squad for nearly three years now and there doesn’t appear to be a way back for Benzema, no matter how talented he clearly is.

“It’s complicated, I’m not stupid but I want to win something with my country,” he confirmed. “I love football, I love these tournaments. The pressure to succeed with your country is something else, I hope my situation can change.

“As long as Deschamps is coach, I will not have the chance to return to the national team,” he intimated.

“It’s been more than two-and-a-half years, it doesn’t take much to understand what is going on. He is someone I respect, but he turned his back on me, it’s hurtful.”
