Despite having been living through his worst ever season since joining Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo actually has a better goal-scoring record than Lionel Messi this term.
The former Manchester United forward has found his best form in recent weeks and put Paris Saint-Germain to the sword in the midweek Champions League tie.
Over the course of the season so far, Ronaldo has played 29 matches in which he has scored 25 goals, working out to an average of around 0.86 goals per match.
That’s better than Barcelona’s star forward, the current top scorer in LaLiga, although it must be stated that the Argentine has played nine more matches than his rival.
In 38 matches this term Messi has found the net on 27 occasions, this works out to around 0.71 goals per game.
Luis Suarez had a barren spell of his own this term, although like Ronaldo he has found his shooting boots at the most opportune moment of the campaign.
The Uruguayan has 19 goals in 24 matches (0.55 per game) and Iago Aspas has 16 goals in 25 matches (0.64 per game.
There may well have been all sorts of suggestions that Ronaldo was never again likely to reach his previous levels of performance, however, he has proven he still knows exactly where the goal is.
Nobody can reach the goal-scoring records Ronaldo has set this season, although if we look solely at LaLiga matches it’s Messi who emerges on top.
Domestically the Argentine international has a record of 0.83 goals per match whilst Ronaldo’s is just shy at 0.81.
In the Champions League the Los Blancos icon has been phenomenal, bettering even the displays of the highly sought after Harry Kane.
In seven matches in this season’s tournament he has contributed 11 goals, this averages at a mammoth 1.57 goals per match.
