John Motson is pretty much the golden standard of commentary, and ahead of hanging up his microphone come the end of the season, he’s been talking about who he thinks is the best player in the game – and made his choice between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi very clear.
He claimed it’s Ronaldo for him – and that the argument will rage on, but the Real Madrid man’s stats are just insane – and Motty admitted they’re both sensational.
Motson told BBC 5 Live Sport’s Friday Football Social: “English players, I’d have to go Gascoigne. I think he was the most naturally gifted English player that I commentated on.
“The overseas players, of which I’m a great supporter of the input they’ve made, but listen our game was lit up by people like Cantona, Thierry Henry, you could go on for ever.
“But I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player I ever saw. How you can argue with his stats, I just don’t know. It’s just bewildering.
“You’re going to say Messi and we’ll have the same old argument. They’ve been the standout players really.
“Cantona probably changed the history of Manchester United, along with Sir Alex Ferguson. And what Arsenal would do to have Thierry Henry now.
“The Premier League wouldn’t be the glowing phenomenom it is now if it wasn’t for the overseas players.”
Ronaldo had been accused of seeing his season lacking in terms of form – but since the knockout stages of the Champions League, there really isn’t any doubt just what kind of season he’s going to have, and Real Madrid might let him down at times, but he never misses a chance to score or to see his side progress.
All talk of replacing him with Neymar also seems to have mysteriously died down, as the player knocked out PSG and once again broke yet another Champions League record.
