Miller claims he recommended both players to the club during his time at Anfield.

He spent nine years on Merseyside, first as Gerard Houllier’s man in charge of scouting and then later as first-team coach under Rafael Benitez

But it was Houllier who ignored his advice to sign Ronaldo and Pique.

“I looked at Gerard Pique and I tried to get him,” Miller told ESPN FC.

“The Spanish delegation he was with at a youth tournament, I think it was his grandfather who was the delegate for the Spanish federation.

“Well he wouldn’t give me permission because I think Man United were already in at that point.

“I brought Cristiano Ronaldo [to the table as a potential signing].

“That’s water under the bridge, I recommended him and saw him at a youth tournament.”
