Man United plotting summer swoop for Real Madrid defender Varane

Manchester United are weighing up a summer move for Real Madrid’s £50million-rated defender Raphael Varane.

Jose Mourinho will bolster his central defence this summer, with France international Varane among the targets on the United manager’s wish list.

Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was in for Varane in 2011, before he opted to join Real, with the Reds eventually signing Phil Jones from Blackburn.

Mourinho tried to sign Varane himself in 2014 during his second spell at Chelsea but was thwarted in his efforts to bring the centre-back to Stamford Bridge.

Now United sources have indicated a fresh attempt to land Varane – who signed a new deal with Real until 2022 last September – could be on the cards.

When United signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January, Mourinho said he hoped more deals between the “top clubs” would take place, with Varane potentially another example of that.

Real are understood to be willing to sell Varane this summer, but are looking for around £50m, while the Reds are willing to pay in the region of £40m for the 24-year-old.

Mourinho is also looking at Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, with United potentially in the market for two new centre-backs.

Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are all facing uncertain futures at United, while Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo – who signed a new deal last week – are safe.

Mourinho is also in the hunt for a new left-back, with Tottenham’s Danny Rose and Jose Gaya of Valencia among the United manager’s targets.
