Although Manchester United have been struggling throughout this season and are set for a summer of change, Jose Mourinho has decided to let Juan Mata and Ander Herrera handle their future as they wish.
The Portuguese coach won’t put the two Spaniard on the market, but he is willing to respect their choices, even if it means they decide to depart the Red Devils.
Mata and Herrera haven’t enjoyed much playing time under Mourinho and the former Athletic Club midfielder in particular has been nowhere near to matching last season’s contribution.
The 55-year-old tactician understands that the Spanish duo have earned the right to decide on their future, although he is aware that their departures might weaken his squad.
He has already made clear to the United board that he is eager to strengthen the team’s defence and midfield, as the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez provides him with enough firepower up front.
During a meeting with the club’s owners, Mourinho insisted that more money should be invested on transfers, while potential departures of key players such as David de Gea should be turned down.
