Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo attended Thursday night’s UEFA gala in Monaco. They were nominated for the 2018/2019 Champions League Best Forward and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year. It was Virgil van Dijk who scooped the second award but Leo Messi didn’t go unnoticed either.
The Argentinean was chosen ahead of Ronaldo as the Champions League Best Forward. Given Messi has scored twice as much UCL goals as his eternal rival, he clearly deserved this accolade.
Cristiano Ronaldo, however, didn’t think so. Just look at his face after Messi was named as the winner!
Messi was interviewed after claiming the award and Ronaldo didn’t even try to make a decent look on his face!
In any case, Cristiano has recently revealed he was annoyed when Messi and Barcelona won titles. For the Portuguese striker, this was like a driving force.
That’s what Ronaldo says: “I have no doubt that Messi has made me a better player and vice-versa. When I am winning trophies it must sting him and it’s the same for me when he wins.”
Messi has beaten Ronaldo for the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League Best Forward of the Season. He was the 2018/2019 UCL leading scorer with 12 goals. Moreover, his goal against Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals was named the UCL Goal of the Season.
As for Ronaldo, he only managed six Champions League goals last term.
