The Competition Committee decided on Monday that the Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid, scheduled for this weekend, will be played on Dec. 18.

The game was scheduled for Oct. 26 at Camp Nou but due to the situation in Catalonia at the moment following the jailing of nine political leaders, the game was postponed.

It was left the Competition Committee to set a new date and they have gone with Dec. 18, which is the date both Barça and Madrid suggested last week.

However, the decision goes against La Liga’s hopes of playing the game on Dec. 4 — they would have preferred Dec. 7, a weekend slot. The league are expected to challenge the date.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas argues that the date chosen will mean serious economic penalties from television rights, not just for the two clubs involved but for the whole league.
