In the summer transfer window of 2018, there were speculations that Cristiano Ronaldo was leaving Real Madrid, with whom he won everything he could and was the first star in the club.
The Portuguese felt he needed a new challenge in his career and decided to move to Juventus whose fans had applauded him a few months earlier in their Champions League tie when he scored a fantastic scissor goal. His agent Jorge Mendes knew it wasn’t the right move.
“Stay at Real, you will be loved and protected no matter how much you play. If you leave, it will only get worse for you,” Mendes allegedly told Ronaldo then, but Ronaldo did not listen to him.
The Portuguese ace, however, left Real for Juventus where he was expected to bring the much-coveted Champions League title. In three seasons he failed to do so and in the end, he left the Turin club in an ugly way to return to Manchester United. And that episode didn’t end gloriously, the previous summer he wanted to leave, but he couldn’t find an elite club, so he stayed for six months to get fired in November and move to Saudi Arabia. It is true that he will be paid extremely dearly there, but one of the best footballers of his generation deserved a better end to his career than playing in a league that is far from his reputation.
