Xavi responds to accusations of bribery against Barcelona

Xavi Hernandez has refused to comment on reports that Barcelona have been charged with bribery by the Spanish public prosecutor, which broke on Thursday morning.

The news comes in connection with the so-called Negreira case, after Barcelona made payments to the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, for a period of 17 years, in the amount of 7.5 million euros.

Xavi was predictably asked about this in his pre-match press conference, but said he had nothing more to add on top of what he has said before.

“I will not answer that. You already know my point. You know what, next week there will be another one. And in 15 days, another one. And in a month another. You already know my point. Take a look at the newspaper archive. Do you like this or not? For me, there was never, never the feeling that the referees helped us”, said Xavi first.

He was also asked if he had had time to reflect on whether it was moral for Barcelona to pay Enriquez Negreira so much money over that period of time, given his position.

“I do not make reflections of this kind. I have very little time and I need to see what will happen with the team, what happened to us in Mallorca, the strategy, Sevilla… I don’t reflect on these issues”, concluded the Barcelona coach.
